Intrusion

Ambition is the last refuge of the failure.
– Oscar Wilde –

Big Girl and I stood outside, in pub’s garden, smoking a sigarette and having a drink together. It was late friday night and the place was crowdy, with here and there also a few drunk guys moving around. While Big Girl was talking to me, I noticed a tall blond guy, not more then five feets away in front of us. He was staring at her. No idea how long he was standing there, not that long I guess, as I’d otherwise notice him much earlier, but he kept staring at her for at least a minute or two, waiting for a glimpse of her eyes.

I listened to Big Girl’s talk while I was staring back at him at the same time. I was now waiting too.
(… soon it will become another piece of body language, with almost no talking at all.)

Intimidating look from the face of a predator

He finally noticed me staring back at him - and then he kept looking at me for about ten seconds. There were no eyes movements on his face, which appeared to be cool and frozen. The flames in his eyes however betrayed his intentions and his true nature. It was the face of a predator – and he was on a hunt that night.

I kept staring back straight into his eyes, with no eyes movements myself either - and he then suddenly gave me a smile.

Him: “Hi, how are you doing?!”
Me: “I’m fine. How about you?”
Him: “I’m fine too.”

He then realised his intimidating intrusion failed, as he suddenly turned away and left the scene.

Big Girl: “Do you know that guy?”
Me: “No. As far as I know he’s never been here before. He’s not a local guy.”
Big Girl: “It’s the same guy who grabbed me at my shoulder, 10 minutes ago.”
Me: “Where did it happen?”
Big Girl: “At the bar, the moment we came in, while you were ordering our drinks… I felt someone grabbed my shoulder from behind and I thought it was someone we both know. Then I turned around and saw him.”
Me: “Hmmm… I obviously missed that one. He must be definitely following you around. But for a kiss or two I might be a little bit sharper and get us even a few more drinks. ;-)”

The next morning Big Girl drew me to Woerden where we had a shoot with Lette and a young 14 years old model. She was naturally escorted by her mother.

It became one of Lette’s and mine best shoots together, and that day Big Girl also got her first basic makeup lesson: face cleanup, day creme, concealer, foundation and powdering. I instructed her to use as less foundation as possible and not to cover parts of the face where foundation wasn’t necessary, due to a perfectly smooth skin this young model had.

Less is more

“Less is more” I prefer to say.

Sometimes I just don’t get it. Why do some makeup artists ALWAYS use foundation, too much foundation even, covering a whole face when there is no need to? Is it because they believe they should use foundation each time, just because they have it in their suitcase and it’s standard procedure? Or is it because they feel better and more confident knowing they did it as they were taught so at school, so they apply one - no matter what? Or …?

After Big Girl applied the basic makeup, I took it from there and finished the job.

Intruding bright, deep blue eyes

For the fist part of the shoot, I kept it as light as possible, so this girl got natural look, as if there was no makeup at all, except very light eyeshadows - and some smooth eyelines and mascara, which brought her intruding deep and bright blue eyes forward. Just what Lette and I wanted - and I also believe the way it should be…. featuring intrusion, intruding young, bright and innocent look. Almost the same look that also little kids have, in their early age before they develop all kinds of fear.

Intruding bright, deep blue eyes. Couldn’t describe those eyes more accurate than you did. Less is always more! (Of something else … in this case: her natural skin). You’ve done a terrific job. Beautiful pics of Lette again. Great teamwork! It shows …

    Best regards,
    Michael.
