slumdog milionaire village kidsSeeing a “Slumdog millionaire” the movie ten days ago, I discovered that half of Indian population hates this movie. The other half just love it. The folks who hate the movie, hate it because it shows poverty, so it touches Indian people directly to their hearts. They hate it also because of the word “dog” in it’s title (that’s what I was told). According to them, India has so much more to show and offer — and they are probably right.

The guys who love “Slumdog”, love it because it shows Indian every day (slum) reality — and they are probably right too.

I’ve seen Slumdog millionaire and I like it.

Slum village

A couple of days ago Kai said there was a big slum village, next to Mumbai’s airport. One of so many slum villages here… The village is called Sahar. He asked me if I’d like to go there with him and see the place.. and I said I’d like to. So, we visited slum village Sahar, the same day he left Mumbai and went back to Germany.

Playing cricket with slum village kids

Even though I have no understanding of cricket, the slum village kids challenged me to play cricket with them.. and so I did.

As soon as Kai and I entered the village, some guy approached us and said “to be careful!”
“Why?” I asked. “I don’t see anyone around looking at us angrily, wanting to hurt us..”
“You never know”, he said. “Just one person is enough.”

So far I could see and I know the people, this guy was the only “bully” one. All others were just friendly and glad to see two “white” guys who finally visited their village. Something like that, happens maybe once a year.

The truth is, it’s not about the slum places and the pictures they show… but about the people and their attitude. Nobody has hurt us in Sahar.

Nevertheless, I like Mumbai and I’ll definitely come back to visit this city again.
