There’s been a lots of fuss lately, abut the way Ralph Lauren makes women look ugly, with Photoshop manipulated images.

It’s from commercial / marketing point of view most probably not the smartest thing to do (as I believe I’ll be within no time on their blacklist), for a professional make-up artist like me - but I’ll say a word or two about it, as I feel it’s my duty to do so. Even more because I think it’s (to say it softly) immoral what these Ralph Lauren guys are doing.

Call it even pe*verse if you wish.

Photoshop manipulated images

If you missed the entire story, you can read it right here (boing boing).

… and also here (thefirstpost.co.uk)

And if they continue the course they sail right now, they won’t be my clients ever, or at least not any time soon anyway.

So here we go:
Ralph Lauren… PLEASE, stop making women look ugly - as no make-up artist, photographer, nor model in the entire world can fix the damage you cause, not to mention that it’s far away from something I’d ever call professional!

What’s wrong with you guys? Are you all insane? Or even sick? So sick that your d*cks only go up when seeing a woman that looks like a thin skinny boy… or even worse?!
Well yes, in that case I’d call it sick.

Don’t you know how “normal women (bodies)” look like these days, for gods sake!?

Either way, I believe your designers are freaky id*ots and should be fired, along with their bosses. What do you think the young girls are gonna think when they see these pictures, huh?! As those “size 0″ anorexia-alike models - under your dictatorship - were not thin enough already?!

I think you guys are cr*eps!

In a short: I’ve done the make-up for hundreds and hundreds of models, so all I can say (AND I CAN SAY THAT!), is that your view on women look (and also their health) is shameless and far away from accurate. So, stop deceiving the mass (and young teenage girls in particular) with such a crap!

Such a shame that a company like yours is one of fashion market leaders. If it’s up to me, your company - and companies like yours - shouldn’t exist at all.

As the matter of fact, I think what you guys are doing, is a crime!

Normal / real models

To compare, this is how normal / real models look like.

No, they don’t have to be size 0 (or even less) in order to fit the clothes and to look beautiful! And above of all, they are still extremely female, sexy, healthy, adorable and very proud & confident women!

Wow man, the first RL-pic is really disgusting! Fully agree with you. Mirjam & Arianne: the real role models!

  2. Alexander says:

Yes Michael, even for the not altered one (2nd RL photo, one on the right.. featuring Russian model Valentina Zelyaeva) I think, well alright.. thanks to RL she might be one of the best paid models in the world, but she’s waaaaaaaaaay too skinny, if you ask me.

If I’d have an opportunity to date someone like her, then it would be - of course - only because of her money. ;-)

Oh wait, it’s RL money. Phew, *spit*!!!
Sorry Valentina, we shall never date I’m afraid. :-/

So, I’d say: more power to real women!

  3. Manali says:

The whole size 0 gaga was blown out of proportion in India too, in the last 2 years when Bollywood’s most popular actress went that shape. But now people have understood that this size 0 sh*t is not good!

As far as Photoshop image against original work is concerned, I believe every photographer, magazines, make-up artists - everyone does it! I am sure even you do it, don’t you?! Correct me if I am wrong :)

  4. Alexander says:

@Manali, we certainly agree that size 0 and everything beneath simply s*cks! So, I still stand behind my statements… that making the models appear thinner then even size 0, is not just immoral but even criminal act! It sends the wrong signal to the young ones and cause many of them to develop all kind of disorders, from physical to mental ones, or both.

Not that I further claim that size 0 is OK. No, it’s not. From my point of view, also size 0 is ugly, unnatural, unhealthy.. and it’s dictated from above, from and by people who have no vision nor taste about the real beauty.

As for your Photoshop reference, yes, there are certain (standard) editing procedures before the pics get published either on the web or in the magazines, but there is a difference of what’s acceptable, like:

    - softening (makes picture appear more glamour)
    - sometimes (piercing or other) scars, or even lens dust & scratches removal
    - background fixing, like removing the dirt from the background paper (mostly floor) or brushing away the corners of the picture that fell out of the background
    - fixing the contrasts & color tones.
    … etc.

And these things were always done, even long before there was Photoshop. Take a look for instance, at all professional glamour (portrait) pics made like 50 years ago… You’ll find these standard procedure elements on nearly all of them. Only the technique used there was different.

With Photoshop and Photoshop alike software, we can do these things (and unfortunately much more..) far more easily. So easy that many guys out there, like above mentioned, screw it up!

Even though it’s standard procedure, I personally prefer to work with photographers where editing is minimal. If everyone does his/her work well, there is often no need for editing, or very minimal at most. But then we talk about professionalism, don’t we?!

  5. Frank says:

It’s simple: Ralph is a FAG who wants women to look like boys! (Fag is the right word here: most of my gay friends agree)

  6. Alexander says:

@Frank, then maybe Ralph should start making products exclusively for gays and also advertise with - and for gays only (hopefully he doesn’t make them too skinny!) and stop abusing women.. so everyone’s happy. Or do I miss here something?

  7. vincent rijs says:

It’s a shame to manipulate women (or men) with photoshop to NON existing so called “perfect” beings so (unfortunately most young girls) think that they do not answer to a non-existing ideal …

  8. Alexander says:

@Vincent, perhaps RL hates women, so his (fag) stuff are brushing them away, all the sizes down ’till they become so thin that they finally disappear. ;-)
